Why we’re obsessed with PROTEIN

After harvesting the same average 120-130” bucks year after year, we began to search for a way to improve the quality of our deer, and like everyone else believed you had to cull the smaller bucks. The missing piece from our management program was protein. Two separate nutritional feeding studies have shown increasing a deers protein and fat intake by just 8% will increase a mature buck’s Boone & Crockett score by 15” (MSU study) and 20” (TPWD study) within the first generation (F1). By the second generation (F2), bucks had gained 28” of antler mass and 36 pounds of additional body weight compared to their free-range counterparts at 3.5 years of age.

Field Results

Here are field results after two years of Fat Mama Feeds:

WHY SOYBEANS?

Our soybeans are 37.8% crude protein and 20% crude fat and are much less susceptible to aflatoxin contamination compared to that of corn. Because our feed is intended to become a supplemental part of their diet, the percentage intake is crucial. Other leading protein pelletized feed contains max 20% protein and 3% fat. In addition, soybeans are high in calcium and phosphorus which are essential nutrients for antler growth. Soybeans are the most cost-effective way to fill gaps where integral nutrition is naturally missing especially in Texas and the Southeast regions of the U.S. As opposed to pellets which have a tendency to break down and clog feeders in high humidity conditions, soybeans are round and will swell when exposed to the same elements, but will still easily discharge from feeders.

GENETICS vs NUTRITION

For generations, the enduring misconception of improving deer quality or a buck’s Boone & Crockett score has been to advance genetics via culling subpar individuals. However, habitat management and, more specifically, nutrition play the largest role in a deer’s development. The most efficient and effective way to improve nutrition is a supplemental feeding program comprised of a high protein and fat diet. Multiple scientific studies exist to negate the culling myth and validate the power of nutrition.

WHY “FAT MAMA”?

As our name implies, we’re advocates of taking care of the ladies first. If does are properly fed, their offspring make a dramatic leap in size and antler score. When allowed to eat a diet comprised of optimal protein and fat, dormant genetic traits reawaken – a biological study called EPIGENTICS. A buck in utero whose mother is consuming high protein and fat will acclimate to those ideal growth conditions.
